Welcome to GOLF’s Top 100 Teacher roundtable discussion, where some of the best instructors in the industry answer the game’s most pressing questions. The goal? To help your game and lower your scores as quickly as possible.
The offseason is always a bit depressing for golfers, but it can also be productive. As long as you know what you need to work on, the offseason can be a time of improving yourself for the upcoming season.
One of the best ways to use your time – in my opinion – is to increase your swing speed. If you can gain some speed before the upcoming season, you’ll come out of winter as a brand new golfer.
What are the best ways to add speed this season? We asked a panel of Top 100 teachers and their answers are listed below.
1. Use a training aid
The best way to build speed is to use training tools like The Stack. After your baseline test, the app will build a custom program for you to determine how much weight to swing, how often, and when to rest. It is the gold standard for improving speed. —Dr. Alison Curdt
2. Train like a sprinter
The best way to add swing speed in the off-season is to train like a sprinter. Sprinters run downhill to feel what it’s like to run faster. You can do the same with golf. After you’ve warmed up (but before you’re tired), in the middle of your session, set aside 10 to 15 balls and focus on swinging as fast as you can, making the loudest swoosh you can make well past the ball. Most players already have speed in their swing, just in the wrong place, in front of or near the ball. Post-ball training speed causes the club to move quickly through impact. Where the ball goes doesn’t matter; the goal is to feel what it’s like to swing faster so that over time you actually do so.
3. Get in shape
Go to the gym with a fitness plan. Combine that with speed training through a system like HiiTS and you are well on your way to building up some speed in the winter. —Jason Carbone
