I just spent the weekend with a Lamborghini Temerario, the replacement for the Huracán that features a new twin-turbo V8 and a 10,000-rpm redline, and a three-motor plug-in hybrid system for good measure. It really is a great powertrain in every sense of the word, even if you’re just thinking about the engine itself. I mean, the V8 produces 789 horsepower on its own. The Temerario’s engine is one of the best I’ve ever experienced, especially when I consider the hybrid stuff.
That got me thinking about the other contenders for the best bikes I’ve ever ridden, a thought exercise I’ll pass on to you. What’s the best motorcycle you’ve ever ridden? I think we should be specific about the best engine, not the best overall car or driving experience. You might really like an engine, but not so much about the rest of the car. That’s fine! But if the best engine was paired with the best car you drove, that’s a bonus. And let’s also just talk about the things you’ve actually driven, and not just as a passenger.

But I think what might take the top spot for me is the original Mercedes-Benz 300SL. A few years ago I had the opportunity to take a beautiful silver-over-blue roadster along 17 Mile Drive during Monterey Car Week; it was the first time I drove something old, let alone so powerful for the time (and valuable now). That 3.0-liter inline-6 is simply fantastic, bursting with life and personality. It’s quick, even by modern standards, and so smooth that it’s easy to drive around town – helped by the excellent four-speed manual gearbox. I can totally understand why every movie star, race car driver and singer used to drive these around.
