Everton finally did some business as they ended the January transfer window by loaning winger Tyrique George from Chelsea.
The deal includes an option to buy, and Everton have strengthened their ranks with the acquisition of another exciting young talent.
A winger wasn’t necessarily a priority going into the transfer window, although an extra-wide option certainly wouldn’t have been sniffed at.
However, Jack Grealish’s (likely) season-ending injury has exacerbated the need for a winger.
And thankfully, it looks like Everton will finally address a huge, burning need in the squad: pace.
George isn’t lightning fast, but he’s certainly faster than any of Everton’s other wide options.
He can play across the forward line, and while he is at his best on the left, that level of versatility is always a bonus.
George played 37 times for Chelsea, making his debut 15 times. In his 1,644 minutes on the pitch, he has contributed to 12 goals (six goals, six assists).
In contrast, Tyler Dibling – Everton’s other young winger, who has struggled to establish himself in the first team (fairly or unfairly) – has played 2,873 senior minutes and contributed six goals (four goals, two assists); none of these goals have happened for the Toffees yet.
Dibling and George are both very talented youngsters with huge potential, and it is really exciting to see Everton adding more young talent to their squad. Moyes may have to go his own way in some respects. He must utilize these talents during the second half of the season. Even as the Toffees push for Europe, Dibling and George are a glimpse of a potential future that should be cherished.
But what else will George bring to Everton?
One thing is clear: he likes to shoot.
A frustration for many Evertonians this season has been that Everton’s attackers have not had enough shots.
In fact, only five Premier League teams have had fewer shots than the Toffees this season, and Moyes’ men are only above lowly Burnley when it comes to shots on target. Only four top teams have scored fewer goals than Everton.
At the risk of channeling Michael Owen’s punditry: if you don’t shoot, you almost never score… George could provide a tonic for that.
George has averaged 2.2 shots per 90 in all competitions this season, which is more than any of Everton’s other wide players this season.
If this excellent video As Cai Jones’ details show, George is fearless when it comes to making shots. He is always looking for an opportunity to open up and get a shot on goal, and that is something Everton have sorely missed this season.
Of course, George is nowhere near the finished product. And he’s not going to deliver Grealish’s creativity.
However, his direct approach and change of pace could be a breath of fresh air for this Everton team, which – especially when forced to chase games – looks decidedly one-sided.
An extra full-back would have been a much-needed boost this term, but as it stands, both full-backs will need to be addressed in the summer.
But with the George deal including an option to buy, if he is given the opportunity by Moyes, and if he takes it, then it is a tempting prospect to have the England youth international on Everton’s books.

If George and Dibling hit it off, it could be Two Tys Go To War next season. Apologies to Frankie fans
