Steve Kouleas: “Wait a minute, wait a minute. So for Connor Bard, what are we talking about here? Like twelve guys. Like he’s getting twelve.”
NHL Rumors: The Chicago Blackhawks and Connor Bedard
Dave Pagnotta: “Like, he’s going to be an eight-figure guy again. Are you looking at that? Is that going to be that figure? Is it going to be a range of 12, 12.5, 13? And Carlsson will certainly argue as part of that that once negotiations get going, he’ll be on the same playing field.”
I wouldn’t be surprised if it gets that big, because then you go to another top talent, and even though, you know, Lane Hutson“He’s a defender, a different category, but the team will argue, well, he’s made a bit of a team-friendly deal to move forward with that. Will that carry a lot of weight?
Probably not, but they will certainly use that as an argument from their perspective to keep that number under control. I would imagine that the period of 12 to 13 years is probably a realistic figure for a four-year contract.”
Craig Button: “I don’t think it’s eight years based on where the caps are going and where the revenues are going. For example, if you’re talking eight years for Connor Bedard, I think it starts at 15 at the very least.”
Who makes Team Canada: Macklin Celebrini or Connor Bedard?
Pagnotta: “And that’s what they’re going to have to do, yeah, and that’s the other factor. And a good point, because the cap is consistently going up, they don’t necessarily have to go full term. Again, we saw some of the other guys go full term, like Hutson, Lacombe and so on.
But for guys of this caliber, you don’t necessarily have to go there because look, if you leave your entry-level contract, 21-22 years old, you’re still controllable for three, four or five seasons depending on the guy.
So they don’t necessarily have to go that far, but from a team perspective you want to try to keep them for as long as possible, at a much more palatable number than maxing out 15.”
