What to expect from Russia and Ukraine’s third round of peace talks

Ukraine wants the return of prisoners of war and “children abducted by Russia”, while the Kremlin said it will “pursue our interests”, because peace talks between the two nations start on Wednesday.
Two earlier ceasefires -the negotiations have led to the exchange of thousands of prisoners of war and the remains of dead soldiers.
There is now renewed pressure to end the war.

What do we know about the cease -Fires?

Russia and Ukraine will meet each other in Istanbul for the last cease-fire, which will take place at the same location where previous negotiations did not yield any cease-fire in May and June, the Agence France-Presse news agency reported.

The discussions in Istanbul can focus on further exchanges of prisoners and a possible meeting between Ukrainian President Volodyymyr Zenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin, a Senior Ukrainian officer told AFP.
However, Russia has indicated that a meaningful breakthrough is not expected quickly.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters earlier this week that the two parties have “diametral opposite” positions about how to end the war in Ukraine.
One of the most important adhesive points at earlier meetings has been about the territory, because Russia has started the Ukrainian land three years ago since the invasion of the invasion.
Ukraine continues to look for the return of the occupied territories, but Russia has not shown the intention to withdraw.
“There is no reason to expect breakthroughs in the category of miracles – it is hardly possible in the current situation,” said Peskov.
“We are planning to pursue our interests, we are planning to guarantee our interests and to fulfill the tasks that we have set for ourselves from the start.”
Asked if he could give an idea of how the Kremlin saw the potential time frame for a possible peace agreement, Peskov said he could not offer guidance for the timing.

“There is a lot of work to do before we can talk about the possibility of a few meetings at the top level,” he said.

Zenskyy outlined what he is looking for in the negotiations.

“The agenda on our part is clear: the return of prisoners of war, the return of children abducted by Russia and the preparation of the meeting of a leaders,” he said.

What happened the last time?

At the time, Russia told Ukraine that it would only agree to end the war if Ukraine would give up large new chunks of territory and accepted limits for the size of the army, according to a memorandum reported by Russian media.

The Russian memorandum, published by the Interfax press office, said that a war regulation would require international recognition of Crimea – a peninsula that was attached by Russia in 2014 – and four other Ukraine regions that Russia claimed as its own territory. Ukraine should withdraw his troops of them all.

Peskov suggested that Russia still has this view.
“There is our design memorandum; there is a design memorandum that has been transmitted by the Ukrainian side. There is an exchange of views and conversations about these two designs that have so far been diametrically,” he said.
Ukraine has repeatedly rejected the Russian circumstances as the surrender.
