What Newcastle United need tonight to return to an automatic qualification spot in the top eight

This is a huge game for Newcastle United.

A win would guarantee a minimum of a play-off spot at the end of the Swiss league.

While a win would also certainly put United back in the top eight after today’s matches have concluded.

Any sort of win against Bayer Leverkusen would mean Newcastle United would finish in seventh place at worst (including the fact that they are guaranteed to go above Real Madrid or Man City when they play each other).

If Borussia Dortmund fail to beat Bodo/Glimt at home, Newcastle would also go above Dortmund if they beat Leverkusen.

It is also possible that if Newcastle win, they could go above PSG. That would require the French team to lose at Athletic Club and these two results see NUFC reverse a current four-goal deficit to GD.

Only Arsenal, Bayern Munich and Atalanta are guaranteed above Newcastle United after today’s results, plus Real Madrid or Man City.

In short, if Eddie Howe’s team win tonight, they will certainly be somewhere between fifth and seventh place in the Champions League.

Three points is what matters tonight, but if they are achieved, Newcastle United’s excellent goal difference will put them in an even better position. With every win, Newcastle would have a minimum +8 goal difference and currently only Arsenal, Bayern Munich and PSG are better.

A win tonight would also mean (if Man City fail to beat Real Madrid) that of the English clubs, only Arsenal would remain above Newcastle United.

All to play for.
