Welcome to GOLF’s Top 100 Teacher roundtable discussion, where some of the best instructors in the industry answer the game’s most pressing questions. The goal? To help your game and lower your scores as quickly as possible.
Practicing in a simulator is a great way to get some reps in the winter. But as you practice in your battlefield, you may become overwhelmed by the amount of data the sim throws at you.
With every stroke you make, dozens of data points are recorded and shared on the screen. This is great for optimizing your swing, but it can also be a bit of information overload for most golfers.
So if you go to the sim to hit balls, what data points should you have? Real be focused? We asked a panel of Top 100 Teachers for their input.
1. Low point
Low point, swing direction and smash factor are what I would recommend. Simulator mats provide a false sense of security because most golfers don’t really know if they have the right swing surface. Solid hits with the bottom in the right place and if you go the right way you’ll be ready for the season in the real world, on the grass. —Martin Chuck
2. Clubface keys
Any data related to face contact (ball speed, smash factor and location) is useful, but it also depends on what you are trying to improve. However, clubface data is important to most recreational golfers, so keep an eye on that. —Michael Hunt
3. Starting direction
Start direction and rotation axis. If your draws start on the right and the spin axis moves to the left (or vice versa) over and over again, you have created a reliable stroke pattern. From there you can work on tightening the numbers or refining others. —Jason Carbone
