Hello hello! And hello from San Diego! I’m here for some mastermind adventures and quality time with my best friend Betsy, which is the best combination.
For today’s post, I wanted to talk about something I’ve been thinking about lately: what I would do differently if I started my health journey today.
what I would do differently if I started my health journey today
I’ve had some major transition points with my health over the years:
– When I first decided I wanted to “get healthy” in college. I’ve tried everything: different eating styles, workouts, routines. Some worked… some really didn’t.
– A few years after my marriage, when I stopped taking birth control and realized how much it had masked the symptoms and quietly exhausted me. I needed daily naps and lived on multiple cups of coffee to function.
– During fertility issues, when I made big changes in exercise and diet and discovered functional medicine (which was still considered hocus pocus in 2009, let me tell you).
– Postpartum, while dealing with intense postpartum depression and anxiety.
– Later, when eye problems and autoimmune symptoms started to appear.
And now… here I am.
Am I perfect? Absolutely not 😉
But I feel better now than I did in college… and it certainly didn’t happen overnight. It took time, mistakes, certificationsexperience and learning a lot about nuance and personalization.
If I were to start over today, here’s what I would do first:
I would stop eating too little
I ate too little for years and couldn’t figure out why my hair was falling out, my energy was non-existent and my body felt stuck. I wasn’t eating enough protein, fiber, or overall calories, and my body was constantly trying to survive instead of thrive.
I would regulate my nervous system before chasing protocols
I was in a fight-or-flight situation from the age of six until…honestly, just a few years ago. I didn’t realize how deeply my nervous system affected everything: hormones, digestion, immunity, sleep. It takes therapy, supplements, habits and a lot of awareness to get out of that state. I still remind myself several times a day, “This is not an emergency.” Most of us vastly underestimate how much our nervous system determines our health.
I would test sooner
If you don’t test, you suspect… and guessing becomes expensive. I was wasting money on powders and supplements that I didn’t need because I had no data. Testing allows you to personalize your plan rather than following what is trending or loudest online.

I would do fewer jobs and ask for support sooner
I worked on my fitness and nutrition for a long time, especially in the beginning. Looking back, I didn’t have to reinvent the wheel. Learning from a practitioner with experience would have saved me years of trial and error.
This is exactly the clarity with which I help my 1:1 clients get it: faster, without burnout, confusion or wasted time.
If you’re just beginning your journey (or feeling stuck after trying “everything”), know this: you’re not behind, you’re not broken, and you don’t have to do it alone. <3So tell me, friends: what did you have to learn the hard way? What do you think has had the biggest impact on your health journey and daily routine?xoGina
