Scott Laughlin: “Hey Friedge, turns out Isaac Howard wanted to go to Edmonton. Are we ever going to find out the truth about why he didn’t end up with the Tampa Bay Lightning? Because on the surface you would have thought, here’s this star from Michigan State, and he got drafted by Tampa. Look at what Tampa is on and off the ice, the Stanley’s pedigree Cup, the great weather, the whole story.” And he’s heading to northern Alberta for a chance to play for the Oilers. I mean, what did you ever hear about why that turned out that way?

Friedman: “All I heard is that the path wasn’t what he wanted. So I don’t know if it was how quickly he would be in the NHL, or if he didn’t like his spot on the roster. But that’s what I was told, it was just, whatever the path was, or it wasn’t actually set up the way he wanted it to be set up. That he was insecure about something. I don’t even know if that meant contracts, but that’s what I wanted to hear.
It’s exactly how Lightning, Lightning, really wanted him. There’s no doubt about that. I remember they were trying to figure out what was going to happen here before it was announced that it wasn’t going to work, that he was going to go back to school at Michigan State. I think he was named a Hobey Baker finalist, and the Lightning made him post about it, and someone told me they wanted him so bad.
But whatever the case, whatever Lightning’s vision was, it didn’t match the vision Howard had, and that’s why things turned out the way they did.
