1) Libido and sexual response
Testosterone plays a major role in sexual desire, arousal and overall sexual satisfaction. Low levels are linked to low libido in some women (especially after menopause or removal of the ovaries).

2) Energy and motivation
It supports general vitality, drive and motivation. When levels are very low, people sometimes describe feeling flat, tired, or less “sparkly.”

3) Muscle strength and body composition
It helps maintain muscle mass and strength and supports a healthier fat-muscle ratio. This doesn’t mean women get fat; testosterone levels in women are much lower than in men.

4) Bone health
Testosterone contributes to bone density (often indirectly by being converted into estrogen in the body). Low levels may be one piece of the osteoporosis risk puzzle.

5) Mood and cognitive function
It is involved in mood regulation, self-confidence and aspects of focus and memory. Low testosterone levels can be linked to low mood or brain fog in some women (not always, and it is rarely the only factor).

6) Hormone balance and overall health
Testosterone interacts with estrogen, progesterone and adrenal hormones. It is part of the whole hormonal orchestra, not a solo instrument.

Some women may notice:

  • Low sex drive
  • Fatigue
  • Decreased muscle strength
  • Bad mood or motivation
  • Lower sense of well-being

Excess testosterone (such as with PCOS) can lead to:

  • Acne
  • Hair growth on face/body
  • Hair loss on the scalp
  • Irregular menstruation
  • Sometimes the mood changes

So it’s really about balance, not about ‘more is better’.

Sometimes it is prescribed (usually in a low dose) for postmenopausal women with persistent low libido that does not respond to other treatments. It is not a general wellness supplement and is not suitable for everyone. Blood tests, symptoms and medical supervision are important here.
