However, these funds may not be enough to address all of West Ham’s problems.
West Ham have £50 million to spend in January
According to Football insiderMick Brown has revealed that West Ham have £50million to spend when the transfer window opens in January. They plan to sign at least three, although there are doubts about whether they will be able to do acceptable business with the funds on offer.
“West Ham won’t solve the problems in their squad. They want a striker for around €20m, good luck. Doesn’t everyone? They need a top striker who will score goals for them, they won’t get one for that price.”
“It’s typical West Ham, the way the board operates there. They want to solve a problem, but they want to do it as cheaply as possible. Instead of bringing in quality options to gradually strengthen their squad, they bring in players who aren’t good enough for a lower price.”
“They have improved since Nuno arrived. They look like a better team, but they will never progress until they are willing to spend the right money. And the most important thing for me is that they are going to spend £20 million on a striker, then £15 million on a centre-back, £15 million on a midfielder. Then you have spent £50 million, and your team is no better off because the players you brought in cheaply are no better than what you have.”
“So they would have been better off spending that £50m on a real top player who they know will improve them, but you can’t tell them, they won’t listen. The club will continue to go backwards unless they are prepared to show a bit of ambition.”
What should West Ham do in January?
The big problem for West Ham lies in the striker area. Niclas Fullkrug will almost certainly leave, so signing a replacement should be priority number one. If they have money left over from this, further additions can be made.
