Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder refused to be signed on the move for Frank Onyeka as the Blades see a new addition to the midfield.
Sheffield United are looking to strengthen their ranks this winter transfer period. Much of the work SUFC has done has been aimed at undoing the mistakes of the summer, which have contributed greatly to their decline this season.
Exit deals have been made and more are waiting, with Nils Zatterstrom among those in line for a move elsewhere. Meanwhile, the recruitment team are looking at players they can bring to Bramall Lane, with Brentford midfielder Frank Onyeka reportedly on the radar.
However, Blades boss Chris Wilder refuses to be guided by speculation. Speak with The starhe confirmed the known desire to sign a midfielder, but did not comment on Onyeka, saying: “We’re looking for someone in the middle of the park, so there’s a list of players who are there, and some are on site and some are miles away.
“And like I said last week, we’re working incredibly hard to get them over the line. We’re still working incredibly hard to improve.”
No clues are being given as Sheffield United continue their hunt for midfielders
It is no secret that Sheffield United wants to strengthen across the board. As Wilder made clear again when speaking to the press, there is a determination to improve the squad and one area where they believe reinforcements are needed is in midfield.
Injury problems have limited Wilder’s depth there. Ollie Arblaster and Sydie Peck have been welcomed back, but that has coincided with a spell on the sidelines for Jairo Riedewald.
Djibril Soumare is facing a suspension, while Tom Davies has continued injury problems this season. It means that a new signing in this area could provide a definitive solution, even if only on loan.
Onyeka would like to move for playing time and SUFC is an option. He has no shortage of interest following his AFCON exploits, although Valencia, Birmingham City and Coventry City have all been linked recently.
What next for Sheffield United?
Sheffield United are in action on Wednesday evening as they make the long journey south to take on a struggling Southampton side. SUFC will see it as a good chance to claim three points with the Saints winless in seven.
The Blades may have been patchy, but they have a lot more momentum behind them. Wilder will demand a response to the 1-0 defeat against Charlton Athletic on Saturday.
While the focus tonight is on on-field duties, the recruitment team remains focused on transfer activities. Onyeka is not the only target with Cian Ashford, Ross Barkley and Dan Neil among the players recently linked.
Center defender Zatterstrom is said to be in talks with Genoa about a move to Italy. Fellow summer signing Alex Matos is also free to leave due to recent links with a move to Sweden.
