The result of the Sussex Stakes, won by 150/1 Chance Qirat, has encapsulated the season so far.

I have often spoken and written about the ‘rhythm’ of a season, with a top horse or garden on the field, but it would be difficult to nominate a leader in both categories at the moment.

I had high expectations for Lake Victoria, which I was reliably informed, was assessed as the best three -year -old in the garden of Aidan O’Brien, but she has been out of operation and there is her pension with the paddocks.

Of the two-year-olds, Gstaad was a convincing winner of the Coventry Stakes, but he missed the Phoenix Stakes last weekend when he was of his feed. In his absence, his stable Companion True Love was beaten on 4/1 by Power Blue, who was defeated the time before by the favorite of five and three -quarters.

The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes came and went without a representative of the three -year -old generation and the Sussex Stakes was won by a horse that was officially assessed 24 pounds on the drift of gold.

I don’t know if there are more professional gamblers in the area, but if so, I would like to know how they are doing this season.

From a personal perspective I would describe myself as a recreational backer. I like to be interested in a race, but I am quite happy to sit and see if I have no strong visibility.

I love multiples and predictions, where you have the chance of a substantial return of limited expenses. That brings me to good company, because the large payment day of Barney Curley came from several bets in its later years.

But I wonder what kind of money was actually gambling on the field of gold on 3/1 on or true love on 4/1?

A few years ago the larger bets on the course were shown in the racing analysis of the next day … sometimes six digits … but that was before the fairs and online sites.

Looking back on Goodwood there were a few strong market movers.

The two with horses in which I had shown an interest were Rhoscolyn and pushed the limit, supported from 12/1 to 11/2 and 6/1 to 5/2 respectively. These movements were a consequence of real market support, while the field of gold and true love were defensively priced by the bookmakers who attracted only a handful of heavy striking people.

I have a calm chuckle when the representatives of the bookmakers appear on the scenes before the racing of the day to say where the early money is placed, aware that only a few pounds can lower the price of a horse the night before.

According to the Statista Research Department, the turnover of off -course bets has decreased over the past 15 years, in March 2023 3.3 billion pounds amounted to 42 percent lower than in 2009.

Given the reports of concluded accounts, affordability controls and the difficulty to get money, I wonder what the volume of activities really is at the gambling markets?
