“We cannot ignore the performances of players like…”: Shubman Gill on Mohammed Shami’s absence from the Indian Test team

India Test Captain Shubman Gill has shed light on veteran pacer Mohammed Shami’s prolonged absence from the Test setup, recognizing both Shami’s exceptional quality and the strong performances of India’s emerging fast bowlers. Speaking to the reports in Calcutta, Gill explained why the veteran bowler is yet to return to the side despite his impressive domestic form.

Shami last played a Test in June 2023 against Australia, and although he made a brief international comeback earlier this year – including the ODI series against England and the Champions Trophy – injuries have repeatedly hampered his return to the longest format.

Addressing the media in Calcutta, Gill acknowledged Shami’s stature while also emphasizing the importance of rewarding current form.

“There are not many bowlers of Shami bhai’s quality. But we cannot ignore the performances of players like Akash Deep and Prasidh. Bumrah and Siraj are also doing well, as we have seen,” Gill said.

He added that the selectors are better placed to decide when Shami can make a full comeback depending on the circumstances and team requirements for the upcoming series.

Shami has been left out of India’s two-match Test series against South Africa, raising questions over his future in the Test line-up. However, Gill suggested the door is still open and selection will depend on location-specific strategies.

India’s fast bowling group has evolved significantly in Shami’s absence. Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, jasprit bumrah and Mohammed Siraj have consistently delivered strong performances in red-ball cricket, giving the selectors several reliable options.

“South Africa are champions – beating them won’t be easy”: Gill

Looking at the high-stakes Test series against South Africa, Gill admitted that the challenge for India is a big one. The Proteas come to India as reigning World Test champions after clinching the title with a win over Australia at Lord’s earlier this year.

“I think these two Test matches are very important for our chances of qualifying for the WTC final. South Africa are a very good team – they are champions. When difficult moments came, we dealt with them well. The pitch is good, a typical Indian wicket,” Gill said.
