The Golden State Warriors are reportedly open to retaining Jonathan Kuminga after the February trade deadline if an attractive offer does not materialize, sources said. ESPN’s Anthony Slater.
Kuminga, who earned $22.5 million this season, played just 10 minutes last month and did not play in the last nine games, including seven DNPs on coach’s decisions.
The Warriors are reportedly largely expecting the 23-year-old forward to be traded, and he may have already played his last game in Golden State.
Representatives for the former seventh overall pick have advised caution to avoid injuries as trade talks continue. This reflects a shared understanding that a deal could happen quickly after he becomes eligible for a trade on January 15.
Kuminga signed a two-year extension worth $46.8 million in October, with a $24.3 million team option for 2026-2027 and a potential $1.7 million bonus from an immediate trade.
Sacramento and New Orleans are the most consistently linked destinations, with Dallas, Chicago and Portland also showing interest, according to league sources cited by Kevin O’Connor of Yahoo Sports.
Golden State’s priority in any trade is acquiring a wing who can shoot and defend alongside Stephen Curry and Jimmy Butler, with the team reportedly willing to include Moses Moody or Buddy Hield in potential packages.
Through 18 games this season, Kuminga is averaging 11.8 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 24.8 minutes per game while shooting 43.1% from the field and 32.0% from three games.
The Warriors are currently eighth in the Western Conference at 19-18 and scoring 114.8 points per game while allowing 113.6 points, a mid-range performance that motivates management to explore moves to improve depth and perimeter shooting.
Any deal is expected to focus on future assets, rotational players or financial flexibility rather than an immediate win-now acquisition as Golden State balances short-term competitiveness with long-term planning around its core veterans.
