SAN FRANCISCO– The NBA postponed Saturday’s game between the Minnesota Timberwolves and Golden State Warriors in Minneapolis amid growing unrest after a Saturday morning confrontation with federal immigration officials ended in the death of a man.
In a statement, the NBA said the game was postponed “to prioritize the safety and security of the Minneapolis community.”
The league plans to play the game Sunday at 5:30 PM ET. The Warriors and Timberwolves will also play again in downtown Minneapolis on Monday evening.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said a 37-year-old Minneapolis man was killed in the shooting on Saturday, but declined to identify him. He added that information about what led to the shooting was limited.
Federal officials say the officer who shot the man is an eight-year veteran of the Border Patrol.
It is the third shooting and second death this month in Minneapolis involving a federal agent, sparking ongoing protests across the city despite subzero temperatures.
Thousands marched through downtown Minneapolis Friday afternoon calling for an end to the ongoing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation in the state. The large-scale protests passed through Target Center and the Warriors’ team hotel downtown.
The shooting took place about two miles south of the arena on Saturday morning, sparking another round of protests from local citizens.
In 2020, NBA playoff games played in the “bubble” at Walt Disney World in Florida were postponed after players chose to boycott following the shooting of Jacob Blake in Wisconsin. The matches resumed three days later.
Saturday’s game was scheduled to air on ABC; Sunday’s rescheduled game will air on NBA TV.
