The Golden State Warriors are expected to prioritize a potential pursuit of Giannis Antetokounmpo over New Orleans Pelicans wing Trey Murphy III, according to league executives.

Michael Scotto of HoopsHype reported that Golden State has long had a crush on Murphy, dating back to the draft process. However, rival executives believe the Warriors are unlikely to deploy all their trade assets unless a real opportunity to turn the franchise around presents itself.

That opportunity, in the eyes of league staff, would be Antetokounmpo. The Bucks star remains one of the most dominant two-way forces in the league, averaging 28.9 points, 10.1 rebounds and 6.1 assists for the Milwaukee Bucks during the 2025-26 season.

Milwaukee has struggled to an 11-16 record, fueling speculation about the long-term direction of the roster. While there’s no indication the Bucks are actively shopping Antetokounmpo, rival front offices continue to monitor the situation closely.

The Warriors, currently 13-14, face mounting pressure to maximize Stephen Curry’s remaining prime years. Curry is still producing at an elite level, averaging 29.6 points per game, but Golden State’s margin for error has narrowed.

Golden State has explored roster upgrades that focus on size, athleticism and scoring versatility. Murphy fits that mold, averaging 21.1 points and 6.5 rebounds while shooting efficiently for the New Orleans Pelicans, but league executives believe he isn’t viewed internally as the centerpiece of the franchise.

Jonathan Kuminga remains a key variable in Golden State’s trade talks. The 22-year-old forward is averaging 12.4 points and 6.3 rebounds, and his name has popped up in Pelicans-related conversations before, though current interest from New Orleans remains unclear.

Scotto also reported that some speculated that the Brooklyn Nets had interest in Kuminga, but never showed any serious commitment. That gives Golden State flexibility but limited leverage unless a star-level player becomes available.

From a basketball standpoint, Antetokounmpo represents a transformative fit alongside Curry and Jimmy Butler. His rim pressure, defensive versatility and transition dominance would immediately reshape Golden State’s offensive structure and defensive ceiling.

For now, the Warriors remain patient. League executives expect Golden State to retain its trade assets unless a top star realistically becomes available, with Antetokounmpo firmly at the top of that internal hierarchy.
