According to ESPN insider Brian Windhorst, the Golden State Warriors are emerging as a leading candidate for Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo. Sources indicate Giannis has made it clear he wants a trade, and the Bucks are actively soliciting offers for the two-time MVP.
Windhorst said: “Giannis is ready to go. He wants to be traded. The Bucks are ready to listen to offers. And this is a maneuver to say, send us your offers. Everything else is political. Just put it aside. Don’t worry about it. Just move on.”
Milwaukee appears focused on acquiring future assets rather than immediate roster help, as Windhorst explained: “Don’t prioritize trades that bring in players that could help them now because the Bucks are in a position where they have to worry about this year’s draft pick. They need to fuel the rest of this season, improve on this year’s draft pick and put themselves in a position to rebuild as quickly as possible.”
Golden State has a significant advantage in these talks because virtually all of its future assets are available for trade. Windhorst noted, “The Warriors own all their future draft assets. They can trade them all first, up to four, and trades, that kind of thing. Steph Curry is there. This discussion starts as Golden State.”
Giannis, 31, has expanded his trade considerations beyond the New York Knicks and emphasized his desire to challenge for another championship. He is sidelined due to a calf injury, leaving his future in Milwaukee uncertain. Any deal would have to strike a balance between immediate competitiveness and long-term wealth building, a challenge the Warriors are best positioned to meet.
If Golden State completes a trade, the addition of Giannis would create a dominant frontcourt pairing alongside Curry in the backcourt and Butler on the wing. For the Bucks, the potential influx of draft assets could accelerate their rebuild while positioning them for future contention.
