A Hong Kong pro-democracy activist living in exile in South Australia has condemned attacks on his wife after fake posters advertising her as a sex worker were delivered to his workplace in Adelaide.
“It was a photo of me and my wife together, and I would say it is an advertisement for sex service. The title of the poster is ‘Hong Kong lonely housewife’ and it shows an explicit service provider with fees,” Hui told SBS News.

He also found a QR code at the bottom of the poster, which he said linked to his Facebook page.

“It’s… harassment, portraying my wife as a sex worker who promotes and invites customers,” Hui said.
Hui is one of four Australian residents facing overseas arrest warrants from Hong Kong’s national security police.

He is among a dozen accused of organizing or participating in the unofficial “Hong Kong Parliament” group, which authorities in the Asian financial hub say is aimed at achieving self-determination and drafting a “Hong Kong Constitution.”

Authorities in Hong Kong say the group aims to undermine state power, under the law imposed by Beijing in 2020 after months of pro-democracy protests in 2019.

Since arriving in Australia in 2021, Hui has faced harassment from Hong Kong. In March, the Guardian reported that his office received a letter from Hong Kong offering a reward for information about him and his family.
After the incident in March, Foreign Minister Penny Wong condemned the letter to Hui, saying it was “a threat to (Australian) national security”.
Hui said this is the first time his partner has been directly targeted by the harassment.
“She is more speechless and didn’t know how to respond to it,” Hui said.

“As the wife of a politician, she understands that she will be under some pressure and spotlight, but not this kind, which is very immoral.”

Other exiled activists are also said to have made themselves targets

Outside Australia, Hong Kong activist Carmen Lau has also been the target of sexually explicit harassment in the United Kingdom, as several of her neighbors in Maidenhead received fake posters of her with sexually explicit deepfake images, according to the Guardian.

Lau said she was “terrified” by these sexually explicit letters, which were posted from Macau, a special administrative region of China.

Despite the harassment, Hui says his wife and family still feel “safe” living in Adelaide. He reported the incident to the police.
Hui said his experience should send a message to Australian society about transnational oppression.
“Even though I am legally and securely protected by the Australian government, they have other means: at the community level, at the personal level, they can still infiltrate Australian territory.”
SBS News has contacted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade for comment.
