Swedish carmaker Volvo has been struggling lately with an aging product range and new models burdened with sub-par software, but Volvo is hoping all that will change with the introduction of its new electric mid-size SUV, the EX60. Just as the EX90 is essentially an electrified version of the XC90, the EX60 will essentially be an electrified version of Volvo’s best-selling If the DNA of Volvo’s smallest EV, the EX30, translates to the EX60, it will be a great car.
The full design of the EX60 will be revealed later this month, but until then, Volvo is teasing us with some tantalizing tech tidbits ahead of the official launch. Volvo estimates that the all-wheel drive EX60 will have a maximum range of 400 miles, and it will be able to offer DC fast charging at speeds of 400 kW, giving it a payback of 170 miles in just 10 minutes. These two figures are on par with the upcoming BMW iX3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC EV, which are likely to be the Volvo EX60’s closest competitors, and it’s also a lot better than the 500km range and 250kW fast charging of the larger, more expensive EX90.
It has more range and faster charging speeds than the larger and more expensive EX90
The EX60 is built on Volvo’s new SPA3 platform, which maximizes efficiency and minimizes weight by using in-house designed engines and integrating the battery directly into the car’s structure with cell-to-body technology. While Volvo hasn’t yet revealed the size of the battery in the EX60, it does say that its in-house developed software and 800-volt architecture allow the car to continuously adjust how the battery draws power and keeps it in its ideal operating range, regardless of temperature.
Volvo also says the EX60 will be the first Volvo to be produced using megacasting, which also helps reduce weight and increase range, and that the battery will be available with a 10-year warranty. Volvo’s Chief Technology Officer says, “The EX60 is designed to be a game changer” and that it “marks the end of range anxiety.” We will inform you soon about more details about the Volvo EX60, including coverage of the official unveiling in Stockholm on January 21.
