A member of the Virginia Safety Service Patrol helped a driver in a demolished car along the I-99, when the State Police of Virginia said that another driver lost control and the patrol worker was hit and killed.
The crash happened on Saturday evening in Fredericksburg at the exit of 301.
The driver of the demolished car was injured but survived.
“We are all deeply affected and mourn this tragic loss of a teammate,” said the Virginia Department of Transportation in a statement. “In honor of him it is absolutely necessary to remember and emphasize the need for all motorists to be careful with caution and care on our roads.”
The deadly crash comes about two years after Virginia has updated his move over the law. The law now requires that drivers of lane change and give extra space when possible when they pass careers or disabled vehicles on the side of the road.
“Cars that zippers at a high speed through you, it’s very dangerous,” said Ragina Ali with AAA. “And these laws are meant to keep those who in fact have their affairs on the side of the road safe
She said that they often do awareness campaigns to ensure that drivers are able to move.
“We will often do studies and surveys and despite the fact that every state in the country has a form of this law on the books,” said Ali. “Often drivers will say,” Oh, I didn’t know I had to slow down, oh I didn’t know I had to move. “
The State Police of Virginia says that the driver who touched the two people remained on stage.
It is not yet clear with which costs that director are confronted if present. The police say that the criminal investigation is still underway.
