The Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, which has been the home ground for Virat Kohli since he played for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL, was deemed unsuitable for hosting large-scale tournaments after the stampede marred RCB’s victory celebrations. However, with efforts by Venkatesh Prasad and the KSCA, government officials have allowed Chinnaswamy to host IPL matches and international cricket in the future.

The Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, one of India’s most famous grounds and home to the most loved IPL team, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, was deemed unsuitable for hosting tournaments that attract the attention of the general public due to the mismanagement of RCB’s victory celebrations, which led to a stampede that marked the death of 11 people.

Since then, Chinnaswamy Stadium has not hosted any of the top cricket tournaments; it even missed some of the KSCA’s domestic tournament matches. They missed hosting the KSCA Maharaja T20 tournament, the Women’s World Cup matches including the final, and finally the Vijay Hazare Trophy matches that saw the return of Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant.

Virat Kohli and RCB’s home base Chinnaswamy gets the green signal as IPL host

After months of uncertainty over hosting matches at the infamous Chinnaswamy Stadium, the government has given the go-ahead to the KSCA to host IPL matches and then international matches.

The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) has been working on ways to prevent further serious incidents since the appointment of their new president, former Indian cricketer Venkatesh Prasad, which received the approval of the Home Ministry. However, the approval is “subject to compliance with specific conditions prescribed by the government and concerned authorities.”

So far, the only issue resolved by the KSCA is a long-standing power issue with BESCOM, the Bengaluru electricity regulator, over fire safety compliance.

Will the ‘King’ return to his fort for IPL 2026?

While this progress is a huge development for the future of the venue, Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s return to the venue for IPL 2026 seems like a very distant deal. Therefore, Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bengaluru may defend their title, but not on their home ground.

The RCB COO, Rajesh Menon, recently had a discussion with the Chhattisgarh Chief Minister about the possibility of the Shaheed Veer Narayan Stadium in Raipur where their home matches will be held in 2026.

The other two options for hosting their matches are the MCA Stadium in Pune and the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, which has hosted WPL matches for the past few seasons.

KSCA wants to solve major problems surrounding the security measures at the Chinnaswamy Stadium

The KSCA is solving the problems at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. They have issued tenders to take corrective measures such as widening the entry and exit gates around the stadium. Their main challenge would remain ensuring the safety of people entering the site.

The IPL starts on March 26 and RCB will play the opening match as the defending champions of the tournament. However, the BCCI is yet to announce the schedule and venues as they await an official confirmation.

The RCB team had proposed to install 300-350 AI cameras for better crowd management, committing to bear the one-time cost of INR 4.5 crores.
