The UFC has released the complete first fight between Magomed Ankalaev and Alex Pereira on YouTube for free, so that the stage is set for their long -awaited Rematch on UFC 320 on October 4. Pereira, who had settled as one of the most feared attackers of the sport with three title defenses in 2024, seemed hesitant during the competition. Statistical analysis of the fight reveals that Pereira landed only 12 significant main attacks in 25 minutes, an unusually low output for a hunter known for his devastating power. The jury members have given Ankalaev the victory with scores of 48-47, 48-47 and 49-46, which ended the reign of Pereira and settled as the new light heavyweight champion of heavyweight. The victory of the Russian hunter marked the highlight of a 13-Vecht undefeated line that goes back to his UFC debut loss in 2018.
Former UFC Light heavyweight Jamahal Hill identified the most important adjustment that Pereira has to make for the rematch, whereby the emphasis is on increased output and cardio conditioning. Hill suggested that Pereira should take more stairs while maintaining a higher volume during the five-round competition to prevent the tactical stagnation that teased his first meeting with Ankalaev.
Fighting sport analyst Dan Hardy noticed that Pereira seemed too careful in the first fight, possibly considering Ankalaev’s struggle threat, despite the successful defending of every Takedown attempt. Hardy advised that Pereira takes on an more aggressive approach, using pressure on the distance and Thai clinch work to control the distance and to prevent Ankalaev from determining his preferred action.
