Mayor Michelle Wu van Boston is confronted with serious recoil of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the White House for comparing immigration and customs enforcement officials (ICE) with Neo-Nazis on Wednesday.

Michelle Wu attacked agents on Wednesday, comparing their practice of wearing masks with “other groups wearing routinely masks”, including NSC-131, a group of New England, classified by the Anti Defamation League, Southern Poverty Law Center and other Neo-Nozi group. “I don’t know any police who wears routine masks,” she said.

However, ICE is not a police department, but a federal law enforcement agency under DHS. They regularly wear masks during enforcement operations to protect both their safety and the integrity of their enforcement operations.

Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons recently tackled the mask criticism in a press conference and announced the arrest of around 1500 ice goals in Wu’s home state Massachusetts. “I am sorry if people are offended by those who wear masks, but I am not going to let my officers and agents go outside and put their lives at stake and at stake their families because people do not like what immigration enforcement is,” he said.

DHS responded to X and called Wu’s remarks ‘sickness’ and noted that the officers ‘clearly identify themselves as law enforcement’. Masks are used by agents “to protect themselves against the target of known and suspected gang members, murders and rapists,” said DHS.
