VICTORIA Cup winner Kingman (Always B Miki) could be a shocking late entry into the $1 million IRT NZ Trotting Cup.
Owner-breeder Mick Harvey kicked things off on Melbourne radio SEN Track this morning.
“We’ll see how the next few days go when Luke (McCarthy, trainer-driver) gets him back home, but if you ask me now… I’d say he’s going,” he said.
“The horse came through that victory so well. He was strong on the lead and is at the top of his game.”
“With the doubts about Leap To Fame and Swayzee and no real standouts in New Zealand, we would be well in the race.
“Like everyone else, I love the NZ Cup. It would be great to have a shot at it.”
The Kingman twist brought back memories of last year when trainer Jason Grimson paid a late entry fee for Swayzee, who then successfully defended his title eight days later.
“We beat Swayzee two starts back and we recently beat Leap To Fame… the form lines are there,” Harvey said.
“Luke has done a fantastic job with this horse and he is still on the rise.
“It’s very tempting to strike while the iron is hot. We could go to the Cup and still be back for the Blacks A Fake in Brisbane (December 6).
“I’m being coached by Luke. We talked about it, but Saturday midnight after the race.”
“He was open to it. Let’s see how the next few days go, but I’m super excited about it.”
Harvey is no stranger to big races and has ridden Grand Circuit stars King Of Swing and Hectorjayjay.
“What great rides I’ve had with them, but anyone who has bred a horse and had it all will tell you it’s extra special,” he said.
“This is the first horse I have bred, so you can imagine the excitement I got last night.
“He is only four and is now really starting to come into his own. Hopefully we have a few more years with him at the highest level.”
