Victor Wembanyama trained this summer with teammate Harrison Barnes and Skills trainer Noah Laroche in Los Angeles, according to a report from the Athletic in Los Angeles and worked on a revolutionary training method called the limited approach. Laroche spent part of the 2024-25 season as an assistant coach at the Memphis Grizzlies.
Wembanyama spent time in Laroche’s gym that participated in three-on-three exercises that were designed to force optimum decision-making. Laroche stopped practicing when Wembanyama performed a euro step and showed him video of a better distance option he currently missed.
The CLA replaces traditional block training with game-like situations with special rules that force athletes to immediately adjust their movements. The method places players in scenarios with different limitations mentioned to simulate unpredictable game environments.
Laroche’s approach eliminates predetermined movements for reading each specific situation. Barnes connected Wembanyama with Laroche after six years to use the methods of the trainer to develop his own game.
“Vic is extremely intelligent, right? So his ability to be pushed, wants to be challenged, want to be great, I think (the CLA) was a natural fit for him,” said Barnes. “It’s good to see that because it opens a different world for boys.”
The Cleveland Cavaliers implemented CLA training last season under head coach Kenny Atkinson, who posts a record of 64-18. The team won his first 15 games and ended with the best attack of the NBA per possession.
Four-time Wnba All-Star Kelsey Plum credit the methodology with transforming her career after working with Laroche. The Los Angeles Dodgers, Liverpool and Oklahoma City Thunder have included similar principles in their organizations.
