Foreign Minister Penny Wong has praised Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado for giving her Nobel Peace Prize to US President Donald Trump, saying it was “very generous of her”.
Machado presented the award to Trump on Thursday during their first in-person meeting at the White House. A White House official confirmed that Trump plans to keep the medal.
In a post on social media on Thursday evening, Trump wrote: “María presented me with her Nobel Peace Prize for the work I have done. What a wonderful gesture of mutual respect. Thank you María!”
On Friday, Wong was asked whether Trump was creating a world order in which “might is right” after the US captured deposed Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro in a military operation earlier this month.

“May I first say with regard to Ms. Machado’s presentation or her presentation of the Peace Prize, that was very generous of her,” she said.

Wong said the world was going through a “time of great change” and the federal government was working to ensure peace and stability in our region.

“What I have also said is that as Australians we need to have confidence in our ability to navigate these changes together,” she said.

‘Excellent’ meeting with Trump, says Machado

Machado, who described the meeting as “excellent,” told reporters she did so in recognition of his commitment to the freedom of the Venezuelan people.

Her gesture appeared to be part of her attempt to influence the future course of her country.

Trump openly campaigned for the award before Machado accepted it last month.

When Trump was asked on Wednesday whether he wanted Machado to give him the prize, he said: “No, I didn’t say that. She won the Nobel Peace Prize.”

First meeting with Trump

The lunch meeting, which seemed to last just over an hour, was the first time the two had met in person.

Machado then met with more than a dozen senators, both Republican and Democratic, on Capitol Hill, where she has generally found more enthusiastic allies.

As the visit was underway, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump had looked forward to meeting Machado but was sticking to his “realistic” assessment that she currently lacked the support needed to lead the country in the short term.

After the US captured Maduro in a seizure operation this month, several opposition figures, members of the Venezuelan diaspora and politicians in the US and Latin America have expressed hope that Venezuela will start the democratization process.

“I know the president was looking forward to this meeting, and he expected it to be a good and positive conversation with Ms. Machado, who is truly a remarkable and courageous voice for many people in Venezuela,” Leavitt told reporters at a briefing as the meeting was underway.
Earlier on Thursday, US officials said they had seized another tanker linked to Venezuela.
The seizure marks the sixth ship targeted since mid-December that was carrying Venezuelan oil or has done so in the past. Speaking to Reuters news agency, the officials said on condition of anonymity that the seizure took place in the Caribbean.
The US Army’s Southern Command confirmed the operation before dawn, saying US forces detained tanker Veronica “without incident”. It said the Veronica “operated in defiance of President Trump’s quarantine of sanctioned vessels in the Caribbean.”
