The Vegas Golden Knights need help from center
Fourth Period’s Dave Pagnotta and Dennis Bernstein joined Steve Kouleas on Sirius XM NHL Network Radio to discuss the Vegas Golden Knights’ second-line center position. Pagnotta and Bernstein discuss the possibility that with William Karlsson done for the season, they could add Nazem Kadri or Vincent Trocheck.

Steve Kouleas: “So you don’t have a gap between putting the (Edmonton) Oilers or putting the Vegas Golden Knights in this group, regardless of where these teams are in the standings?
Vegas, remember, (Mark) Stone has only played 28 games and he’s having one of his best seasons. They did it with an Akira Schmid, right? There are three men. He could be the two. He could be the one. He could be a trade bait. We’ll see. So Vegas has a lot of options because they made it work. Like you said before, Marner is a centrist, right?
Dennis Bernstein: “Well, that’s the challenge for Koul. Although William Karlsson’s injury has a big impact here. Kelly (McCrimmon) may have to go out and get a center at the trade deadline because yes, you want Mitch Marner, but is he a shutdown center? Who’s their shutdown center if you get to the playoffs? They don’t have one.”
Kouleas: “You’re talking me into Nazem Kadri.”
Bernstein: “That would definitely be a jackpot for them.”
Kouleas: “Then you are Eichel, Kadri, Marner has switched. Hertl”
Bernstein: “Is that enough to compete against Colorado? It is. And so is Dallas. I’m not saying it would beat those teams, but it would give them a chance.”
NHL Rumors: New York Rangers, Washington Capitals and the Vegas Golden Knights
Kouleas: “Vegas is daring. We saw it there. This selection that exists now is not the selection that I will see on March 7.”
Dave Pagnotta: “They’re not afraid to take those swings, and they’re not afraid to spend the money. We all know this. If Kaarlsson is ready, this is what they have to figure out. Is he ready for the regular season? If he’s ready for the regular season and can come back in the playoffs, then it’s only $3.8 (million) and change that they can free up in cap space, and then they’ll worry about the playoff roster when they need it.
If he’s ready for the playoffs, throw him at the season-ending LTIR and you’ll have a full $5.9 (million) to work with. Makes it a lot more palatable to pull off a Kadri-type takeover, or whoever is available in the center position. That’s top level. That fits with that. That 2C. The man you mentioned earlier”
Bernstein: “Vinny Trocheck. Put him on the team.”
Kouleas: “Is that the team that called?”
NHL Rumors: New York Rangers, Artemi Panarin and Vincent Trocheck
Pagnotta: “Well, maybe not, not the one I’m referring to. I’m waiting for a text back to see if I can, okay, if I can say who the team is. We’ve already talked about it on the show and maybe mentioned it a while ago, but I don’t know if it’s Vegas. But there are teams that want to fill that hole. And for Vegas, they have to figure out what the realistic timeline is for Karlsson.”
How much leeway do I actually have here? Do I have money to play with? And if so, how much? And that’s what I think Vegas needs to figure out with Karlsson.”
