We have one more trade to announce as the Vancouver Canucks trade Kiefer Sherwood to the San Jose Sharks. The Canucks get two second-round picks (one in 2026 and one in 2027) and Cole Clayton from the Sharks.

NHL Rumors: No Hot Seat, New York Rangers and the Vancouver Canucks

As Rick Dhaliwal said on the Donnie and Dhali show last Friday, the Sharks were a team to watch because they had the assets to make this deal with the Canucks. San Jose has the cap space to extend him.

Activity around Sherwood had increased in recent days. Late Monday morning, Fourth Period’s Dave Pagnotta confirmed Dhaliwal’s report that the Canucks had lowered their price at Sherwood. He noted that the Canucks lowered their asking price for Sherwood from a first-round pick plus.

The Sharks bet on themselves this season when GM Mike Grier was put in a position to add his team in a wild card position. They get the Canucks’ leading scorer, Sherwood, who has 23 points (17 goals and six assists) in 44 games this season. However, he remains out of the lineup due to injury and it is unclear when he will return.

NHL Rumors: Don’t get caught up in the language of the Vancouver Canucks and Kiefer Sherwood

This is a risk for Grier, who continues to move the San Jose Sharks in the right direction.

As for the Canucks, this is the first trade in the rebuilding process following the departure of Quinn Hughes.

Canucks GM Patrik Allvin said in a press release: “We would like to thank Kiefer for all his hard work and dedication in Vancouver. As an organization, we are very proud to have given him the opportunity to grow and excel as a player. Given the current state of play and the direction of our rebuild, we felt it necessary to take such a step as we continue to build our pipeline. In addition to adding two draft picks, Cole is a right defenseman who will report to Abbotsford.”

The Vancouver Canucks aren’t done yet as they continue to rely on Elias Pettersson, Conor Garland, Jake DeBrusk, Evander Kane and others. Vancouver continues to look to put together draft picks and young players in the coming seasons.
