NHL Rumors: Quinn Hughes trade talks are taboo around the league
Host: “Okay, so speaking of oh boy, you dropped a bomb on Saturday. Quinn Hughes, you mentioned this on Headlines. There have been teams that have reached out to the Vancouver Canucks. You said New Jersey was one of them, like Fuchs (Mike Futa) and I’ve talked about this on the air, off the air, it really feels like all roads lead to New Jersey one way or another. Whether it’s through trade or in free agency.
Because, I mean, without knowing anything for sure, with certainty, I don’t know, it feels like Quinn Hughes is destined for the New Jersey Devils. Because if he is traded elsewhere, because he doesn’t have any trade protection at this point and for the remainder of his contract, he might not sign an extension, and that seriously limits what the Vancouver Canucks can do in a trade.”
Elliotte Friedman: “I have to tell you, I think these are all things that are being discussed and resolved right now. And I think one of the challenges here is that I don’t know that Hughes thought this would happen now. I mean, I don’t know that anyone thought this could possibly happen now, and we’ll see what happens.”
Since we spoke on Saturday, it has become clear to me that there is more going on. Sometimes it works that way, Matty. The glass breaks and more leaks through. And I’ll say one thing about this, for example: Vancouver is pretty much radio silent on this. Like they don’t want to talk about it. They recognize the radioactive nature of this conversation, especially in their own market. And the Canucks aren’t saying anything.
And what I think is that I think there’s been at least some conversations about it. I don’t know where it is. I think there are a few teams that have spoken and I think one of the challenges here is that, as I said on the pod this morning, there is quite a lively debate going on about where Hughes would like his final team to be. He said it earlier because he thinks the question is kind of stupid. Of course he would want to play with his brothers. But is this the right time? Is it even workable? Could this be happening right now?
NHL Rumors: Quinn Hughes was asked about the trade talks with the New Jersey Devils
Like now, Vancouver, if they want to do this, the biggest control they have is they control where he goes, right? And so, I mean, it is, and like I said, I’m not sure Hughes thought this would be a conversation right now. So you’re trying to play, and you’re probably also deciding, “Hey, where do I see my long-term future?”
So I think there are a lot of balls in the air. I think actually something happened, I think, that this conversation had to happen before everyone was really ready for it, I think. And, I think, could I say the word ‘think’ more often in a sentence? I guess what I believe is, what I believe is that everyone is figuring all this out and where we’re going.
NHL Rumors.com Note: The Vancouver Canucks brought this firestorm around Quinn Hughes himself. Whether they actually move it now or later is up for debate. But was it wise of Jim Rutherford, president of Hockey Operations, to say Quinn Hughes wanted to play with his brothers? Probably not. Neither issued the memo about openness for business. How the Canucks love drama, and there has been for years. That’s how they work.
