Amine Adli struck at the near post deep into stoppage time to earn all three points for the Cherries after giving up a two-goal lead in the second half.
Evanilson struck early to put the hosts ahead after Van Dijk failed to clear his lines before Alex Jimenez doubled their lead shortly afterwards.
The Liverpool captain pulled a point back on the stroke of half-time and Dominik Szoboszlai appeared to have saved a point with a brilliant free kick in the 80th minute. But they were left empty-handed when Adli came out after a goal battle.
Van Dijk cries foul as Bournemouth beat Liverpool at the death
Van Dijk complained about being fouled, but it appears his own teammate – Curtis Jones – was the one who collided with him.
“What I felt on that pitch was that I was clearly blocked,” he told Sky Sports. “The referee and the VAR don’t care.
“We’re going to have to accept it. I can stand here and say it shouldn’t have been given, but it was. It is what it is.”
Liverpool were down to ten men when Bournemouth scored their second goal, as Joe Gomez had to leave the field with an injury and no replacement had yet been sent.
“We were with ten men, you could say that we have to kick the ball out,” said Van Dijk. “It’s not Alisson’s fault. It’s easy to say he should have done this. It’s a split second.”
“We decided to keep the ball because we had possession and unfortunately for us we had to concede. Losing never feels good, especially as a Liverpool player.”
