Van Dijk explains why one Marseille question for Slot crossed the line

Virgil van Dijk has publicly backed Arne Slot after asking a pre-match question about his manager’s future “disrespectful” after Liverpool’s Champions League victory in Marseille.

After our 3-0 win in France, the Liverpool captain made it clear that the timing and nature of the demand crossed a line, especially given the context of the season and the work being done within the club.

The comment came after Slot was asked about speculation linking Xabi Alonso to his role on the eve of a crucial European match, something the Dutchman himself described as “one of the strangest questions” he confronted.

When Van Dijk asked about it after the match, he did not shy away from the subject. The central defender asked the question “disrespectful” in comments reported by BBC Sports.

The 34-year-old acknowledged that criticism is part of life at Liverpool, but insisted it should be based on performance and not speculation.

This speculation comes from people like Jermaine Pennant who said our boss has now done that “I have a problem” because the now former coach of Madrid and Leverkusen is on the market.

He pointed out that this was a difficult period for both the players and staff, but praised the way our head coach handled the pressure while keeping the team focused.

That attitude reflected the calmness that Slot showed when the subject was first discussed.

Van Dijk’s defense also ended up on a big night on a personal level as he marked his 350th appearance for the club with a clean sheet and one of our most complete performances of the season.

On the field we gave a response that left little room for doubt.

Goals from Dominik Szoboszlai, an own goal forced by Jeremy Frimpong and a late strike from Cody Gakpo secured a dominant away win, putting us in a strong position to finish in the top eight of the Champions League.

According to Opta analystLiverpool are now unbeaten in thirteen games in all competitions, the longest run ever in Europe’s top five leagues.

That context is important when considering outside noise.

It also adds perspective to repeated comparisons with Alonso, especially when you look at recent head-to-head meetings.

These results underline that Slot has already come out on top with our former midfielder, while also delivering a Premier League title in his first 18 months at Anfield.

Van Dijk’s intervention felt meaningful because it came from the dressing room and not from the bench.

At a time when speculation has tried to create distance between the manager and the team, the captain’s words actually strengthened unity.
