“It was quite fast two hours [between matches] But I think I’ll be fine tonight, “said the 29-year-old, whose two earlier finals at Tour level in Munich arrived in 2022-23.

Van de Zandschulp was a semi-finalist in Winston-Salem in 2022 and held Mpetshi Perricard against only seven Azen and won 12 of 19 points on the second serve of the 22-year-old on the way to claiming three service providers.

“You have to play your own service games very well. If you are broken once, the set is usually over … try to return, you try to adjust your position a bit, guessing where it is going to serve. Commenting is pretty difficult, so you have to guess a little.”

The game seemed to be on the way to a third set before Van de Zandschulp broke when he remained 3-5 in the second with a bit of brave mains. “You get some confidence of that,” he said. “I was happy that I broke him again at 5-5 and served pretty well at 6-5.”

Fucsovics, 33, went on to his fifth final at tour level when Sebastian Korda withdrew from their planned semi-final. The World No. 94 won the Bucharest title last year, six years after his only other title in Geneva in 2018.
