Valve has not yet acknowledged the issue, but SteamDB’s unofficial status page confirms that the Steam Store, community features, and primary web APIs are all offline. The problems started just after 1:00 PM ET; by 1:15 PM ET, reports on DownDetector had risen to more than 6,000. If you’re trying to access Steam through the mobile apps, you’ll probably have trouble there too, as the platform is inaccessible across the board.
This isn’t just about shopping either; the outage appears to impact the APIs for major online games such as Teamfort 2, Dota 2And Counterattack 2. Some users claim that the service returned shortlybut it seems to go back and forth with no real resolution.
The timing of this outage is particularly difficult because it is the day before Christmas. You’d think Valve would want its services to run smoothly during the holidays. This isn’t the first time Steam has struggled lately. In October, the store and services were offline for about an hour. Even more dramatic is that in September the enormous traffic from the Hollow Knight: Silk Song launch managed to crash not only Steam, but also the Nintendo eShop and Xbox Store at the same time.
Since the gaming services are unstable, you may have unexpected free time. If you’re anything like me, you’re probably still struggling to finish your Christmas shopping. With the holidays right around the corner, shipping deadlines are tight, but you still have a few options for tech gifts that can ship quickly.
The Samsung Odyssey G9 OLED goes for $778 on Samsung’s website, but the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 at $1,500 might be more your speed if you really want one of the best monitors on the market. Since we don’t know how long this outage might last, you may not be able to play anyway, so waiting for a monitor won’t be that bad.
There is speculation about what it is, but a Reddit post pointed out that people who work at Steam have to miss the holidays because the software needs to be fixed. Employees or management probably had to interrupt their vacation to come in and solve the problems. So try to be friendly when sending messages on Twitter to get the company’s attention.
While we wait for Valve to fix the server issues, it’s probably best to assume that you won’t be logging into your games anytime soon. If you need to buy games for friends on PC, you might have better luck buying Amazon gift cards, WalmartAnd GameStop. This way you can be sure that they will receive a gift on time, even if the store has not yet been repaired.
