Racing identity Ted Ryan, who had a 40-year broadcasting career, has died at the age of 83.

He died on Monday after a long illness.

Ryan was a well-known race caller of both greyhounds and racehorses, calling over 15 of them Melbourne Cups for national television and radio.

He has worked for all major networks in Melbourne and Sydney, as well as the two Melbourne Racing radio stations.

He later became Racing Editor for The Melbourne Observer. On Facebook, Editor-in-chief Ash Long said: “I first met Ted on Channel 9 around 1975. He did a segment on greyhounds on The Bob Maumill Show. He first became interested in the neddies while still at school and spent a few days wagging his tail to attend bush meetings (by train). He worked on radio, TV and in the press. He loved his job.”

Brendan McKenna recalled: “Ted was a legendary figure in racing circles… galloping, trotting, greyhounding. A key figure of the Ch.10 Melb. Cup coverage where he managed to get those ‘insider’ tips during the early morning gallop. Also disrespectfully referred to by his many friends at the age of 10 as ‘back-of-the-head-Ted’ because Ted pioneered the, now standard, ‘grabs’ of each Melb cup jockey as they stepped off the scale. Back then, there were no “edits” and the hoops weren’t told to line up for the media. Viewers saw each jock’s reaction, but the only image of the interviewer was “Ted with the back of his head.” But the jockeys agreed because they had so much respect for Ted Ryan. TEAR
