Musetti and Goffin will give up in their career for the fifth time and open the US for the second time when they collide in round two on Thursday. Their earlier Flosing Meadows Showdown was an absolute thriller, won by Musetti with 3-6, 7-5, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (11-9) in the first round three years ago. He leads the overall head-to-head series 3-1, although Goffin prevailed in their most recent meeting via a 1-6, 7-6 (6), 6-2 decision during the Shanghai Masters of last fall.
When he is healthy, Musetti is without a doubt one of the best players in the world. The 23-year-old Italian, who comes in 10th place in the ranking, reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon in 2024 and the French Open Semis in 2025. This season he has a 27-12 record after removing Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in four sets on Tuesday. At the age of 34, Goffin will be without steam and a ranking of no. 80, because he won only nine of the 25 games on the main tour in 2025. The Belgian has done well to beat Quentin Halys 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-3, 7-5 in the round, but Musetti is a completely different kind of opponent. This should be easy for the favorite.

(31) Gabriel Diallo vs. James Munare
You have to like the chances of Diallo in New York, not only to win on Thursday, but also to make a deep run – especially now that Jack Draper has left his part of the draw. The 23-year-old played great at this tournament last summer and qualified for the main table that eventually lost in the third round to Tommy Paul in a fourth set of Tiebreker. Diallo is even better 12 months later and climbs to No. 33 in the world.
The next one for him is Munar, who is 0-2 in the head-to-head series and lost to Diallo in the US Open First Round last summer (6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5). A few months ago, the Canadian also had 7-5, 6-3 on the grass courts of Mallorca. Both boys come from quadries in the opening round. Munar played well this year, but nothing suggests that he will turn the tide against Diallo and beat such a big batter on a fast hard court.
