An expanded edition of the FIFA World Cup and a robust talent pool of 2008 United States players have provided a unique opportunity for US talent.

The 48-team field is expected to include more than 20 players from clubs in the United States competing for other countries.

Here are some names you should know.

Félix Contreras, Mexico

Contreras is a central defender for Real Salt Lake and is originally from California. He is a quality and stable option at the back.

Nikolai Pierre, Haiti

Haiti’s arrival in the tournament brings with it Pierre, who is on the books at the Orlando City SC Academy.

From Parker, Canada

One of the best 09s in the country is on the list with Canada. He is an extremely talented striker who has a great chance of playing in any age group.

Antonio Riquelme, Chile

The third player at Real Salt Lake is a two-way attacking midfielder who contributes on both sides of the ball. NYCFC forward Zidane Yanez joins him on the Chile squad.

Mayson Barillas, El Salvador

Barillas, born in 2009, is an attacking midfielder at DC United’s Academy and will play.

Ethan Scally, Japan

The LAFC Academy goalkeeper is committed to Cornell. He will compete for the starting role in goal for Japan. He is committed to playing at Cornell.

David Garcia, Venezuela

Garcia signed a two-year MLS NEXT Pro contract with the Houston Dynamo this year after going through the academy.

Joshua Fuentes, Honduras

The FC Dallas Academy goalkeeper has been regularly involved in the Honduran youth set-up in the run-up to the World Cup.

Lucas Lee, Indonesia

Lee has made the long journey to compete in Ballistic United’s Asian qualifiers in Northern California. He is listed as a defender for Indonesia and can also play in central midfield.

Anisse Saidi, Tunisia

After moving from the Union to San Diego FC, where he signed a professional deal, Saidi will play for Tunisia. He has dual nationality and has been drafted into American camps in the past. He played nine minutes in the MLS this season.
