Q&A: Financial Planning Tips for University of Central Missouri Faculty and Staff
Answers to employee questions with Aaron Sloan, MBA, ChFC®
Aaron Sloan is a financial advisor based in Harrisonville, Missouri, who specializes in providing financial planning services to University of Central Missouri employees. Aaron helps his clients get the most value out of their University of Central Missouri benefits and compensation package so they can enjoy life and feel confident in their financial future.
Q: As a financial advisor with experience helping University of Central Missouri faculty and staff save for retirement, how can you help them get the most out of their benefits?
Aaron: We get the most out of your UCM employee benefits by coordinating your individual retirement savings plans with your MOSERS retirement benefits. Proper planning can help create flexibility in choosing the option that best maximizes your MOSERS payout in retirement.
Q: When you first speak with a University of Central Missouri employee, what questions do you like to ask to better understand their unique circumstances and determine how you can best help them achieve their goals?
Aaron: Questions I like to ask:
- What other universities have you worked for before?
- Have you worked for universities outside of Missouri?
- Based on when you first joined a qualifying university, are you covered by MSEP, MSEP 2000, or MSEP 2011?
- Have you contributed to a 457 plan or 403(b) plan?
Q: Is there a particular benefit available to University of Central Missouri faculty and staff that you believe is not being utilized or understood by employees as well as it should be?
Aaron: MOSERS can be quite confusing for some employees. Pension entitlement, payout amount, payout options and BackDROP all work differently depending on an individual employee’s situation. Each employee’s situation and retirement can be maximized by having a financial plan that works alongside this retirement benefit.
Q: In addition to University of Central Missouri employee benefits for retirement savings, are there any other types of benefits offered by the company that you find valuable to discuss with your clients?
Aaron: UCM’s Educational Development Program can have a major impact, both for an employee looking to further his or her education and for an employee’s family members. Higher education costs continue to rise. This benefit offers the opportunity to reduce or even eliminate these costs for employees and their families.
Q: What actions do you recommend to University of Central Missouri employees who are thinking of leaving the company to take a job elsewhere before resigning and shortly afterward?
Aaron: Check if you are currently eligible for MOSERS. If you move to a new university, your years of service to MOSERS will continue to increase. If the university is outside of Missouri, does that state have its own pension that needs to be reviewed?
Q: How do you recommend University of Central Missouri employees nearing retirement age prepare to transition from living off their paycheck to relying on other sources of income?
Aaron: Be flexible in “where” the retirement income comes from. Don’t rely solely on your MOSERS pension. Maximize your payout by creating a financial plan that creates more flexibility for you, your partner, your family and your heirs. We may also need to look at BackDROP options, if you qualify, to see if it makes sense to take a lump sum in addition to your income.
Q: What would you suggest to University of Central Missouri employees who have been managing their finances on their own up until now to help them decide whether they should work with a financial advisor at this stage of their lives?
Aaron: My goal as a financial planner is to improve what you are already doing. We need to create efficiency in your financial life. I’m here to answer questions and take some of the stress and uncertainty around money out of your financial life. By working with me, you can feel like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders, knowing that you don’t have to navigate your financial life all alone.
Q: What are some of the unique financial planning challenges you often encounter with your clients who are University of Central Missouri employees, and how do you help them overcome these obstacles?
Aaron: Many are unclear or uncertain about what exactly their retirement income will look like. We can estimate or assess your retirement income and position assets to maximize your retirement life.
Q: Is there anything that often comes up during your first meeting with University of Central Missouri staff that surprises you?
Aaron: I often see employees who have worked at other universities across the state line, on the Kansas side, or who are considering finishing their careers in Kansas. The combination of MOSERS and KPERS together can be very powerful if we coordinate both retirement benefits through the financial planning process.
