Although things have improved on the recruitment front since INEOS came on board, they are co-owners of Manchester United haven’t had the same luck when it comes to their managerial appointments.
It was a poor decision to keep Erik ten Hag after the unlikely FA Cup win, given the Premier League form the team displayed under the Dutchman.
And replacing a manager who relied on playing in transition with the help of wingers with Ruben Amorim, whose system did not allow for wide men, was ridiculous.
The Portuguese struggled to impose his rigid 3-4-3 system, which included playing three players at the back and two wingbacks, as the Red Devils sank to new depths under him.
Amorim did not suit United
United have traditionally been known for their wingers, while they play a traditional four-man defense. And according to The Daily Mailthe twenty-time champions of the English league seem to have learned their lesson.
INEOS will target a left winger this summer as they plan to keep four players at the back while bringing back traditional wingers.
“The left winger market will be one to pay more attention to in the coming months, with United likely to stick with a back-four system regardless of whether Carrick remains in charge or not.”
With United likely to appoint a new permanent head coach once the current season ends, this news will come as a blow to the managers who are left with three players at the back such as Oliver Glasner, Andoni Iraola and Roberto de Zerbi.
INEOS will not make the same mistake again
Either the aforementioned trio will have to adapt their systems, or INEOS will continue its search elsewhere.
Interestingly, this increases Michael Carrick’s chances of staying at the helm.
Not only has the former England international started in stunning fashion, but the interim head coach also knows the club’s ethos well from his playing days.
United are back in action next weekend, with a home game against Fulham. Carrick will be desperate to ensure the momentum doesn’t slip away.
