Middlesbrough boss Rob Edwards has done that declared striker as Tommy Conway’s best role, despite his reliability in other areas.
It was a dream start to the season for Middlesbrough under the management of former Luton Town and Watford boss Rob Edwards. Boro are second in the table, only behind high-flying Coventry City.
Their brilliant start to the season has been down to both a top coach and a brilliant core of young and exciting players.
Edwards have a wealth of attacking options to choose from, and they will need to use everything they have to achieve consistent results and maintain their position as genuine promotion contenders. One man who has been a mainstay at the start of this season is striker Tommy Conway.
Signed for Bristol City last year for a reported £4.5 millionConway has been a solid player for Middlesbrough, playing his best football as a central striker.
But as Boro have added to their strong wealth of attackers, Conway has played a deeper role at times.
Sverre Nypan, Morgan Whittaker, Sontje Hansen and Delano Burgzorg are all options in that advanced midfield role. But Conway’s performances have not been bad so far this season and he has received plenty of praise from his boss.
Speak with The Northern EchoEdwards said of Middlesbrough man Conway:
“There is no doubt about it: nine is his strongest position.
“But he is so reliable in other things, especially his work rate out of possession.
“There is no doubt that his role has changed somewhat in recent games. But Tommy is all about the team.”
Middlesbrough are looking to bounce back with Tommy Conway firing on all cylinders
Middlesbrough tasted defeat for the first time this season in their final game before the international break, succumbing to a 1-0 defeat to Portsmouth.
It led to them losing their position at the top of the championship table.
Edwards expects his team to recover from a mediocre performance. An adjustment to Conway’s positioning could prove to be the decisive factor.
With Coventry City off to a storming start, Boro can no longer afford to make a mistake if they are to have any hope of returning to top spot. With the wealth of attacking options available, including an in-form Conway, they will be looking to collect all three points at home to Ipswich Town.
Could this be the year for Middlesbrough?
It has been almost a decade since Middlesbrough last gained promotion to the top tier, and since their relegation the following season they have rarely looked like a serious challenge for the top two.
But with Edwards at the helm and the exciting squad they have, belief is flowing through the Riverside this season.
Only Frank Lampard’s Coventry City have looked up to Boro this season. However, time will tell whether the Sky Blues have enough depth to compete in the long term.
No one would blame the Riverside faithful for believing this season. With the talent in the squad and the belief Edwards has, Conway and co may just have enough to finally achieve what so many before them have failed to do.
