Sourav Ganguly has backed Mohammed Shami, saying there is “no reason” why the veteran pacer should remain out of Team India.
The former India captain praised Shami’s strong Ranji Trophy form and urged the selectors, led by Ajit Agarkar, to take note of his performances for Bengal.
Shami, who has not played for India since the Champions Trophy, has collected 15 wickets in his first three Ranji Trophy matches this season.
He played a key role in Bengal’s two early victories and has bowled more than 90 overs, proving his fitness after a long break. Despite this, the experienced fast players remain on the sidelines as the selectors push for a younger pace.
At an event in Calcutta, Ganguly praised Shami’s form and fitness. “Shami is bowling exceptionally well. He is fit and we have seen in the three Ranji matches how he has single-handedly won games for Bengal,” Ganguly said.
The former BCCI president also sent a strong message to the selectors and emphasized that Shami still has a lot to offer across all formats.
“If you ask me, in terms of fitness and skills, it is the same Mohammad Shami that we know. I don’t see any reason why he cannot continue to play Tests, ODIs and T20s for India. His skills are immense,” he added.
