The Human Rights Office of the United Nations said on Tuesday that the “weapons” of food for citizens in Gaza is a war crime, in its strongest comments that are still run on a new model of auxiliary distribution by an organization supported by Israel.
Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), supported by the US and Israel, started Food distribution activities in Gaza at the end of MayAfter Israel has cut stocks completely in the occupied Palestinian territory for more than two months, causing warnings of mass of famine.
The UN and large aid groups have refused to collaborate with the GHF – an official private effort with opaque financing – due to ensuring that it was designed to comply with the Israeli military objectives.
Since the organization started operating, “the Israeli army has shot and shot Palestinians to reach the distribution points, leading to many fatalities,” the spokesperson for the UN human rights told Thameen al-Kheetan during a Geneva press conference.
Kheetan said that more than 410 people were killed by gunshots or grenades fired by the Israeli army while trying to reach GHF distribution sites since it started to work,

The death toll came from the Palestinian health authorities and other sources, including non-governmental organizations and was verified by his office, he said.

“Desperate, hungry people in Gaza continue to face the inhumane choice to hung or run the risk of being killed while they are trying to get food,” he said, the system descriptive as “Israel’s militarized humanitarian auxiliary mechanism”.
“The weapons of food for citizens, in addition to limiting or preventing their access to living services, forms a war crime and can be elements of other crimes under international law under certain circumstances.”
Asked if Israel was guilty of that war crime, he said, “The legal qualification must be made by a court.”

Israel has long rejected accusations that war crimes committed in Gaza and blames Hamas hunters for damage to citizens for operating among them, which denies the militant group.

Auxiliary system a ‘horror’, says UNRWA Chief

Philippe Lazzarini, the head of the UN Office for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, also criticized the GHF on Tuesday.

“The newly created so -called auxiliary mechanism is a horror that humiliates desperate people,” said Lazzarini during a press conference in Berlin. “It is a death trap that costs more lives than it saves,” he said.
UNRWA had long brought the attention of auxiliary efforts in the region, but was sidelined by the activities of the GHF.
Israel has accused UNRWA of providing coverage for Hamas militants and earlier this year the agency forbade to operate on Israeli soil or to contact civil servants.

On Tuesday, Lazzarini called UNRWA to gain access to the Palestinian territory and to restart his auxiliary efforts.

“The humanitarian community, including UNRWA, has the expertise and must be able to do their work and offer help with respect and dignity,” he said.

“There is no other alternative to tackle the challenges of spreading hunger in the Gaza Strip.”

More than 20 killed waiting for help in Gaza in the most recent incident

On Tuesday, Gaza’s Civil Defense Agency said that Israeli troops killed 21 people who waited for help near a distribution site in the center of Palestinian territory, the last fatal incident aimed at helpers.
Spokesperson for the civil defense Mahmud Bassal told that 21 people were killed and about 150 injured “as a result of the directions of the Israeli occupation forces at meetings of citizens waiting for help … in the central gaza strip with bullets and tank scales” in the early hours of Tuesday.
Israel launched his war against Gaza after Palestinian Hamas militants were attacked in October 2023, killed 1200 people and took 251 hostages, according to Israeli tallies.
According to the Health Minister of Gaza, the subsequent military attack by Israel on Gaza killed almost 55,700 Palestinians, while moving almost the entire population of more than two million and causes a hunger crisis.
