The Secretary-General noted that, in a world in which “we democratic values are questioned”, the country-where about 800 languages are spoken-a preference for solving problems peacefully through dialogue.

Time for climate justice …

The climate crisis is high on the agenda during the visit, where Mr Guterres leaves the capital to visit a rainforest area and to discuss the problems caused by the changing climate with representatives of civil society.

The media in Port Moresby, the UN chef expressed gratitude and solidarity with Papua -New Guinans, for how they tackle an existential challenge that do not make their own.

“Papua -NEW -Guinea does not contribute to climate change,” he noted. “Papua -NEW -Guinea has a negative emission record, due to a huge carbon gutter: the admirable forests of this country and the ocean.”

… and economic justice

The ability of the country to adapt to the ever-volatile climate and the development of his economy is also impeded, Mr Guterres explains, by his designation as a country with an average income-what means that it does not have access to the types of concessional financing, such as subsidies, low interest loans and debt relief, which are available for low incoming nations.

This, he said, is “an injustice that must be corrected.”

Part of the issue, according to the Secretary General, is the outdated nature of international financial architecture (a recurring theme during his mandate). The institutions that were created more than 75 years ago must be reformed “to have developing countries such as Papua -Guinea to have a much stronger voice and a much stronger influence in the way decisions are made,” he argued, “and a much higher access to the drugs that are essential for the development of the country.”
