Ukraine has until Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 27, to accept the new US peace plan. The deadline is artificial and betrays the White House’s impatience. The threat is crystal clear. The proposal is completely unbalanced, in favor of Russia. The new supposed American mediation, materialized by a rough 28-point plan and another document offering NATO-type security guarantees to Kiev, was implemented behind the backs of the Europeans. Since the revelation in the press mid-week, the E3 countries (United Kingdom, Germany and France) – which are meeting in South Africa this weekend for a G20 summit abandoned by the United States – have started crisis management.
The plan provides for very painful and even unacceptable concessions for Ukraine, starting with the surrender of additional territories, which are not justified given the situation on the ground. Ukrainian forces must withdraw from the part still under control in the Donetsk region, leaving room for a demilitarized buffer zone, but de facto under Russian control. The Kherson and Zaporizhia regions would be divided along the conflict line. A general amnesty would be considered for both sides, which would prevent Ukrainian citizens, victims of rape, torture or kidnapping, from demanding justice.
