After her successful UFC debut, amid several big wins for Canadian fighters at UFC Vancouver, Melissa Croden foresees a boost in the Canadian MMA scene. There was plenty of Canadian representation on the UFC Vancouver card, with the likes of Mike Malott, Aiemann Zahabi, Kyle Nelson and Charles Jourdain all scoring key wins.
When asked if it feels like we’re ready for something big in the Canadian MMA scene, in terms of entering a new peak era and boom for the big fight up north, Croden said [via MMA Canada],
“Yes, that’s actually a good point. I guess I think that way too. Not to get political or anything, but I think Canada is weird that way, where we’re all passive and nice until we’re not there anymore; and we’ll be passive for a while and then we say, “Okay, this is enough.” Like the freedom convoy for example, like everyone is following the rules that the government gives them and then finally like we can’t do this anymore [laughs].”
Melissa Croden: “Canada is tired of all these great fighters not being signed” to the Ultimate Fighting Championship
As the new UFC rookie, who just earned her first win with the Ultimate Fighting Championship, talked about how she enjoys seeing how different cultural sensitivities manifest in fighter personas, Croden continued. [via MMA Canada],
“So I think so; you see that personality coming out in the MMA world as well. Like I like to observe it myself because it’s just funny to see different countries have their different cultures and personalities. [laughs]. I think Canada is definitely passive, but until enough is enough, and I think what you pointed out is certainly true.
“I think Canada is tired of all these great fighters not being signed and we are slowly rising to the occasion that I think we represent, hey, we have athletes too. There aren’t as many of us as in the United States, but there are some talented fighters here and yes, they deserve the recognition and the opportunities too.”
