What is a UFC card without a small weighing drama? For UFC Shanghai, that drama came when Brian Ortega and Aljamain Sterling weighed.
The last two hunters who came on the scales flew rumors that Ortega had been admitted to the hospital and was out of the fight. An ambulance was seen in the Fighter Hotel, related or not, but it turned out that the fight was on. With a catch, however, in which both men weigh 153 pounds.
Although the weight problem reportedly stood on the side of Ortega, it did not matter. “T-city” versus “The Funkmaster” was an attempt. A former 135 pound champion (sterling) versus a former featherweight Challenger (Ortega), in a five-round Co-Main event.
Whether Ortega was compromised by a heavy weight cut, was not clear early, but Aljamain stood one who pushed forward. Sterling minced meat at Ortega’s lead bone, inside and out. In a low output round, Ortega had landed a few figures in strikes, while neither of them seemed to think of a Takedown.
The legs took place for Aljamain Sterling in round two; Ortega therefore showed a little redness. Sterling was still far ahead in the striking department, although he almost created an opening for Ortega with a rotating attack. Ortega’s lead bone showed some stretch marks or nodules. Aljo then landed a blow that Ortega saw complaining about an eye chef. The referee ruled it a blow, but Sterling actually stopped and chose to give Ortega a break, to say the least a questionable tactical move. Good sportiness, but a repeat showed that it was a blow. Ortega got his break, the round closed and Sterling had given away a chance to finish.
Sterling almost had a Takedown of a captive kick in the third, but he could not dump Ortega completely. “T-Stad” still had output problems, but at least he was not delayed. Ortega slid out, stumbled by an aljo bone kick. Ortega then landed its own kick, while the pair of tit-for-tat exchanged. Sterling went up with a staircase after he had hit a rotating attack. The crowd became restless after three rounds with low actions; The corner of Ortega was also restless and told their hunter that they needed “this whole minute” when the round was worn out. Sterling ended the frame with a rotating attack.
Ortega found round four more than probably behind the score cards. Sterling was still well moved, stayed outside, forced ortega to follow. Ortega tried to cut the cage and eventually connected to a combination that led to a conflict with just under two minutes left in the fourth. However, Sterling was in a flash in control, pressed Ortega in the fence and then landed a Takedown. A minute was on the clock and Ortega didn’t have much time to work. Sterling was on the guard of Ortega, which he soon closed. Ortega then used the fence to turn itself around, while sterling fired a ground n ‘pound before the horn sounded.
Ortega’s corner called for a finish, preferably early in the round, prior to the fifth. He came out with a little more Pep in his step, and they soon held. That didn’t last long, and Ortega then changed from levels for a Takedown to be reversed and on his back. Ortega Sterling cut with a right hand near the Midway marking. Suddenly Aljo withdrew and Ortega was finally in the fight after four and a half rounds. Ref Herb Dean then warned Sterling about the embarrassment after he continued to withdraw. For two minutes left and sterling went into hiding, slid around and took the back. He would eventually drag ortega down and briefly pulled his back, but ended up watching. That let Ortega Hammerfists fire off his back, while Sterling landed body shots. Sterling opened, Ortega almost climbed, but instead Sterling came on top again, with the couple hit back and forth on the floor until the horn sounded.
Official result: Aljamain Sterling Def. Brian Ortega by unanimous decision (50-45, 50-45, 50-45)
