Back for their 13th visit to Rio de Janeiro, the UFC offers the city its first Fight Night card in over a decade for UFC Rio. Former lightweight champion Charles Oliveira takes on his opponent Mateusz Gamrot for the occasion. In the co-main event, former flyweight Deiveson Figueiredo takes on Montel Jackson.
After a devastating first-round knockout loss to Ilia Topuria at UFC 317, Oliveira looks to jump back into the win column this weekend with a victory in his home country of Brazil. After once reigning at the top of the lightweight division with one title defense, ‘Do Bronxs’ enters the Octagon as a huge fan favorite among the native crowd.
Gamrot was last seen in action last May at UFC on ESPN 68 and recorded a stunning victory over Slovakian competitor Ľudovít Klein, who was undefeated in seven fights. Taking advantage of the biggest opportunity of his UFC tenure, “Gamer” was able to put himself on the cusp of his first title shot with a monumental victory over the legendary Brazilian.
Amid a two-fight losing streak, two-time 125-pound gold standard Figueiredo is looking to regain a foothold in the immensely stacked bantamweight division after winning his first three bouts in the category. Despite recent setbacks, “Deus Da Guerra” still remains a prominent threat to everyone in the division due to his wealth of experience as a former promotion champion.
Jackson, winner of six straight tilts, is coming off a phenomenal victory over once-undefeated Daniel Marcos in Iowa at UFC on ESPN 67. As he crosses the toughest test of his professional career, “Quik” could catapult himself to top contender status at UFC Rio should he succeed in toppling once-flyweight royalty.
