Two women died after being hit by a car while trying to help a wounded kangaroo on a busy highway in the north of Melbourne.
The dead have led to warnings about the dangers of stopping to help animals in the wild.
The women were hit and killed on Thursday evening on the Hume Highway in Craigieburn.
Road Policing Assistant Commissioner Glenn Weir said the couple drove to town when they hit a kangaroo and stopped to help.

The police believe that another vehicle that drove in the same direction only saw and waved their car in the “last minute” to avoid it, making the women hit at high speed.
A 30-year-old Beveridge woman died on the spot, while a 30-year-old Thomastown-Vrouw was flown to the hospital and later died.
The driver remained on the spot and helped the police.
A Wirres spokesperson for Wildlife Rescue Organization told the local ABC radio that it was “completely understandable” that people want to help injured animals.
“People get so sad when they see an animal on the side of the road,” he said.
But in such situations they must contact the rescue groups of animals in the wild, he said.
Weir said that the part of the highway was a dark area at night.
He said everyone wants to stop and help wounded animals, but motorists reminded the dangers to do this.
“It is inherently dangerous to be on the road, especially at night … and Drizzly conditions,” he told the local ABC radio.
