Emergency services work on reclaiming the bodies of two women who died in the Victorian High Land.
The women’s bodies were found by hikers near a remote cabin in Nelse, about 400 km northeast of Melbourne, on Friday afternoon. Their deaths are not considered suspicious, the police said.
The police were called for the first time after two hikers had found the bodies near Cleve Cole Hut around 12.50 pm.
“Uniform officers, together with the Search and Rescue Squad and Air Wing, responded and started their way to the isolated scene,” said Victorian police in a statement on Friday.
“The identity of the women is not known at this stage, but it seems that the couple, believed in their twenty or 30s, may have been in the area for walking and camping.
“The police appeal to information from the public to help identify those involved, because we are not aware of current reports of missing person.”

Due to the circumstances and isolated location, the police camped on the spot on Friday evening. It was expected that the emergency services would restore the bodies of the women from Mount Bogong on Saturday.
The police are expected to give an update on the deaths on Saturday afternoon.
The Tasman police also carried out a major extraction operation on Friday, after the death of a woman during a rafting on the Franklin River.
In a statement, the Tasman’s police said that search and rescue teams have completed an operation to save 11 people who are stranded deep in the Tasmanian World Heritage Wildernis area.

“With the permission of her family, the police of Tasmania can unfortunately confirm today that a 49-year-old woman from South Tasmania drowned on Thursday afternoon.
“Initial investigations indicate that her smoothly turned around and she was caught in rapids.”
No other members of the group – including the partner of the woman – suffered serious physical injury, the police said.
Research continues, but it is believed that the group of friends came from Tasmania and Interstate and had experience.
