Bangladeshi police have arrested two persons in connection with the attack on BJP MP Kahagen Murmu and MLA Sankar Ghosh in North Bengal. This is the first arrest by the local police in the attack case of the BJP leaders.
According to officials, one person was arrested from Nagrakata and another from Jaigaon. The two have been identified as Akramul Haque and Govind Sharma.
The arrests come after Monday’s stone attack on BJP MP Khagen Murmu and Siliguri MLA Sankar Ghosh in Nagrakata area of Jalpaiguri. Both leaders helped flood-affected communities when they were targeted. BJP leaders alleged that the attack was orchestrated by TMC members.
“TMC’s Jungle Raj in Bengal! BJP MP Kahagen Murmu, a respected tribal leader and two-time MP from North Malda, was attacked by TMC goons while he was on his way to assist with relief and rescue efforts,” wrote BJP spokesperson Amit Malviya on X.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the attack, calling it “utterly abhorrent” and reflecting the “pathetic law and order situation” in West Bengal.
“The manner in which our party colleagues, including a sitting MP and MLA, were attacked in West Bengal for helping the people affected by floods and landslides highlights the insensitivity of the TMC and the absolutely pathetic law and order situation in the state,” PM Modi said. He also urged the West Bengal government to focus on relief efforts instead of indulging in violence.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Mamata Banerjee visited BJP MP Khagen Murmu Tuesday at a private hospital in Siliguri. Murmu, who represents Maldaha Uttar, is undergoing treatment after the attack. Mamata Banerjee had reportedly been in touch with the medical team treating him and assured all necessary support from the state government.
Speaking to reporters, she said: “I have received all the information. He has high blood sugar. It needs to be controlled. I also wished him the best and a speedy recovery.”
North Bengal, including Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Darjeeling, has been badly hit by floods and landslides due to heavy rains, leaving at least 30 people dead and many missing.
A day after Khagen Murmu was attacked, BJP MLA Manoj Kumar Oraon was also reportedly attacked in his Kumargram constituency in West Bengal. The BJP alleged that Oraon was attacked by Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers on Tuesday while distributing flood relief materials.
Oraon suffered injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment. Speaking from the hospital, he said, “While I was trying to help people affected by the floods, I was suddenly surrounded and attacked. This is the state of democracy under the TMC.”
However, the TMC denied the allegations and termed them “baseless”. A local party leader claimed, “It was Manoj Oraon who had first attacked an elderly man in his area.”
The West Bengal BJP condemned the incident and accused the ruling party of “politics of terror”. The party posted on
The post also included images of the injured MLA being taken to hospital and several damaged vehicles in the area.
